There are several English-language theatre companies in Montreal. Watching plays is very different than movies or television, it is a very interesting experience. Check out these different theatres.

Centaur Theatre

The Centaur is Montreal’s main professional English Theatre company. The theatre is in Old Montreal in the old Montreal Stock Exchange building, not far from Notre-Dame Basilica. The season is usually from September to May. Tickets are $20 for students.

  • 453 St Francois Xavier Street, Metro Place d’Armes

Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts

The Saidye Bronfman Centre for the Arts usually has English-language shows. The season is from October to May. Student prices are between $21 and $25.

Repercussion Theatre

Repercussion Theatre does Shakespeare in the Park. They perform a free show (people usually make a donation of about $10) at different parks on summer evenings. Bring a folding lawn chair or a blanket and snacks. It is a lot of fun to watch a play in a beautiful park under the night sky. Check the website for a schedule in July or August to find out when they are playing.

National Theatre School of Canada

The National Theatre School has graduating students’ shows every fall and winter. The school and its plays are at the Monument-National, a famous old theatre building downtown, near Chinatown. Tickets are $7.

  • 1182 Saint Laurent, Metro Saint Laurent or Metro Place d’Armes

Fringe Theatre Festival

In early  summer, there is a festival of small, cheap theatre shows call the Fringe Festival. Some of them are great, some of them are not, but they are always interesting.
